Suppy & Demand
For the last 30 years, sovereign governments have been selling their gold reserves. However, over the last 5 years, that trend has changed and now central banks are buyers. More demand equals higher prices: Econ 101.
Here's a graph of the Russian Central Bank's gold holdings. Looks like they are pretty bullish on gold I'd say.
